A lot of paper

If you’re like my lovely mother and still have newspapers from 1978 that you haven’t read, RUN to the sanitation department and rent an industrial-sized dumpster to leave in your driveway for a week.

You can touch your mail and papers more than once, but only on the way to the trash can.

Do you have a list of “things to file” that never ends?

Well, guess what, toss that, too.

You can always get a second copy printed or look up the information online.

Clothing

Twice a year, my mom made me try on clothes for the next season.

She would always try on summer clothes on a cool morning and woolens and flannels on the hottest day on record.

(If your kids criticize you for trying on clothes in the air conditioning, you can use this as an example.)

If you haven’t worn something since before you had your second child, it’s probably not worth keeping (unless, of course, the dumpster is full).

Use this great advice that I just found out: Pick three nights a week to try on five things from your closet, and then do the same thing with your dressers. At this rate, the average American woman should be able to wear out all of her clothes in about 3 years, 9 months, and 14 days. Don’t worry, because by then it will be a different season!

Toys for kids

To give your kids a variety of things to do, you might “limit” the number of toys they can play with each month and switch them between the house and the garage.

That’s too much trouble. My boys were recently told that if they left their toys on the floor when they went to bed, they would be thrown away the next day. After you do this twice, you’ll be able to control this hot zone.

I hope that these ideas have given you new ways to look at the problem of clutter and made you want to try some new solutions.

Given how much fun you’ll have with this dumpster, you might want to rent a second one for the husband’s things.
